Stories for the future

How do you weave climate change stories into your productions?

I’m saying ‘how’ rather than ‘why’ because the ‘why’ is more redundant than ever on a day that temperatures reach a new high in the UK.

The stories we watch on screen can have a huge influence on how we live our lives. There’s a tendency to think that stories about climate change have to be depressing or preachy or dystopian.

But stories can also be inspiring, can show us new and better ways to live - both on a daily basis and showing alternative futures.

Now is the time to be thinking of new stories to take us forward. Stories are about overcoming challenges and climate change is the biggest challenge out there.

‘The climate crisis is also a crisis of culture, and thus of the imagination’ as Amitav Ghosh says in his book ‘The Great Derangement’. So it’s time to imagine a a better future and start seeding that future in the stories we tell.

What do you want society to look like in 10 years? 25 years? 100 years? How can you bring that into your stories on screen?

Here’s a guide from Albert to get you thinking about how you can weave stories into existing productions or thinking about new ones.
