we are all made of story.

I see stories in everything and my job is to help you do the same because storytelling is the oldest and most effective form of communication that we have. Most of us grew up on stories and it is a pattern that our brains recognise.

I spent almost twenty years at the BBC, first as a radio producer and then as a story trainer and consultant. I worked as a story consultant with a large number of award winning programmes. I designed, delivered and ran courses and events about story for production and digital teams as well as for HR and finance. Story is not just for the screen or the page. It’s for everyone.

If there is one thing I enjoy more than constructing stories, it’s talking to other people about story. There are so many different stories in the world, each with its own purpose. Stories can entertain, provoke, challenge, inform, educate and inspire. They were my way into another world when I was a child and my way to understand the world about me now.

A good story cannot be devised; it has to be distilled.
— Raymond Chandler

I have trained hundreds of people in story at the BBC, Sheffield Doc/FestCreative SkillsetTRC MediaWildscreen Festivaland the Copenhagen TV Festival  and others, delivering popular practical workshops on story, scripting or pitching. I have trained individual documentary makers, factual programme producers and teams for specific series. I focus on introducing the basic elements of great storytelling and then working with the participants to see how they work for the story they want to tell.
